My Husband, The Food Snob

The other day I was talking to Mike about how I scored 2 free packages of Bar-S hot dogs at the grocery store that day. Emmett likes hot dogs and I was happy with myself. He was not that impressed however and replied to me how gross Bar-S hot dogs were. He said, "They're made of scraps and junk." And I responded, "Sorry, but all hot dogs are made that way". He said "Not the ones we buy." I was confused, "Which ones are those?" He said, "You know, brats".

I got a good chuckle out of that. I never ate a bratwurst in my life until I met Mike. Mike is the type of guy that loves to eat good food. Not just tasty, but good for you food, too.

One Sunday a couple weeks ago it was time for dinner and there was not much in our cupboards since I hadn't been grocery shopping that week. Mike was tired and hungry after he got home from his Sunday meetings. I suggested making some grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup (something that requires a whole 3 ingredients that we had on hand). Mike went on to say how he wasn't in the mood for "that kindof food", and I didn't feel like waiting for something else. So we decided to make our own separate thing. Sometimes we do this if we're in the mood for different food. So I proceeded to make Emmett and I some grilled cheese sandwiches and Mike miraculously wound up making beef and bulgur pilaf with mint. After that day I have since dubbed him "The Food Snob"

Mike loves to cook. Not just your regular old mom-type recipes (which is my specialty) but gourmet food. Recipes that includes various ingredients like falafel, bulgur wheat, Asafoetida, chickpea flour, or garam masala. He really enjoyed the movie Julie & Julia, and even contemplated buying her cookbook "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" but instead he decided to purchase a cookbook online called "Savoring India".
His latest adventure is cooking Indian food. He bought a bunch of Indian spices and one of them was stinking up the house so bad I made him take it downstairs. In the basement. In the unfinished cement storage room, just to get away from it. Sunday night we ate Aloo Tikki (potato patties with spicy pea filling). Monday night we had Makhanni Murgh (buttered chicken) with basmati rice. Then on Tuesday I cooked, and we had Tuna Noodle Casserole.

Thankfully, my husband enjoys any simple thing I cook and eats it gladly, as long as its not Bar S hot dogs. Which is now in the freezer and will wait to pull them out until the summer BBQing months arrive. We'll see if I can surprise him with a hot dog on the 4th of July and if he'll really know what it is.

The tuna noodle casserole was a gourmet tuna noodle casserole. Don't let Lisa fool you, she makes some pretty darn good food.

If you get anyone who comments in defense of Bar S beef franks, saying that they honestly, in their heart of hearts would choose them over any other tubed meat for any other reason than the fact that they cost less per package than a candy bar, I will fold all the laundry for a week. Anyone who posts in defense of Bar S who is later found to have been less than truthful can come to our house and eat a package of boiled franks for dinner.

HaHa. Our husbands are so similar. Chad is the gourmet cook in our family. Me, I can make spaghetti pretty well but I'm still learning beyond that. Thanks for the post, it brought a smile to my face.

Wow, I have no idea what half of those things you mentioned are. :) As for Indian food... I think I'm officially disgusted by it because some guys in our apartment building cook curry or something of the form seriously every other day if not more and it REEEEEEEEEEEEEKS!!! (So I totally hear you on making one of the ingredients go downstairs! As for your comment on Mike eating "good for you food"... I'm not sure brats are on that list!! P.S. rock on on two free packages of hot dogs. :)

That is so funny! I'm glad I'm not the only housewife out there who doesn't cook gourmet food. Brandon is definitely the better cook, too, but likes my "homecookin" - I must say, the Indian food sounds pretty adventurous!

Oh my funny!! There are so many things I don't know about you guys! I think it's awesome that you have a gourmet cook in your house, (my mom does that for me). I am the kind of person who gets super excited about free hot dogs!

Always appreciate a man who will get in the kitchen and cook, no matter how bad it smells.
I have to agree with Mike on the hotdogs. You will have to smother them with pork and beans or chilie to make them palatable.
I think you cook more like your mom.

Interesting! I did not know this about Mike. I guess I'll have to have him make me something next time we're up in UT. Seriously, I can't even pronounce a lot of those things you mentioned, and wouldn't have any idea how to cook with them!

Props to Mike! I'm seriously impressed! When Chris makes dinner we usually end up with:
a) leftovers (if it's an option)
b) korean ramen or
c) korean ramen.
Might be why he doesn't cook often... ;D

Also, can I just say... I LOVE INDIAN FOOD!!!! One of my best girlfriends is Indian, she introduced it to me and man, I just love it. BUT, when I am pregnant I cannot make it myself. I don't know why exactly, but I think I just can't handle the smell of the seasonings before it's all mixed up & delicious.

That said, there's just something about comfort food that gets everyone... =)
