There was a time when our kitchen walls were painted like this. A simple light beige color.
Awhile ago I was reading in an interior decorating magazine about painting your house. The advice when choosing paint was: "Be brave, not beige". The magazine was trying to encourage its readers to be bold when choosing colors for your house. Bright, fun colors to brighten up a room, not boring beige colors that won't stand out or show personality. I've had that in the back of my mind when thinking about decorating our house, and most recently our kitchen. Well, about 2 months ago when we started this project we went to the store and picked out some paint (this was before our decision to tear out the cabinets). I decided I wanted a mustard-yellow color for my walls.
To give you an idea of what I was thinking:
Well this what it turned out looking like:
It turned out SCHOOL BUS ORANGE. It was hideous. So much for bravery. (and if your're in the market for orange paint I have a full can waiting for you for free!)
So we went back to Lowe's and decided to go in a different direction and got this color:
This time we actually painted the whole kitchen, not just 1/2 a wall. You might think its a lot like the original but its actually much darker. I thought my walls looked like chocolate pudding. I was disappointed once again. (ditto on free chocolate paint!)
Now lets fast forward to the next chain of events with our walls.
Yes, call me crazy, but for paint color I went back to the original! It just so happened to go perfectly with my new countertops and cabinets we picked out.
You'll notice the bottom isn't painted, thats because the cabinets are going to cover it up.
I know it doesn't look like much, but progress is being made! Mike is working on the kitchen every spare minute of every day. He cleared the floors down to the bare bottom, and we hope to tile this weekend!

Oh the joys of home improvements!!! I am sad that yellow color didn't work out- it looks so cute in the example picture!! We have boring beige in 80% of our house. Haha. (Orange in our kitchen, and green in Cam's room.) I can't wait to see how everything comes together in your kitchen!!
What a funny post! I love that you went back to the same color... what are the odds!? It'll look great though and always be in style. The inspiration picture was awesome... but I agree with you on the school bus color. Good luck on the tiling! That will be very exciting to see!
Oh, paint color is the bain of my existence!? It never looks as good on the wall as you think it will in your head!? I've recently made a rule that I will only use colors I've seen on actual, real-life walls. :) But good for you for being brave enough to try! And honestly, I love beige walls...you can add color and accessorize elsewhere! :)
Wow, that was quite the journey. Sorry that you didn't get your bright fun color, but then again, you can always show personality with accents, and then you can change them more often without so much work! We are excited to see how it turns out. Good work Mike :)
that is exactly what happened to me with my green bathroom! i wanted a nice olive green color, and it turned it to an army green bathroom. oh well we don't have to live with it anymore now
I have to tell you that I've been thinking a lot about your kitchen project! For mothers day a few of us pitched in (some of us just $, others time too) and we decided to fix the ceiling & floor in my mom's kitchen. When my brother went to get the stuff he decided to do ceramic tile and get enough for the bathroom that shares the floor (it doesn't have any kind of separator) and he also picked up some bead board and a new sink for the bathroom. It was a bit more than we anticipated, but not too bad. THEN they pulled up the floor and found that he had to do much more than just replace the tile & layer below. He ended up having to pull all the cabinets, replace joints, wall studs, etc. because of water damage (he also did a little plumbing to stop the slow leak he discovered). What a mess. They just finished tiling the floor yesterday... and amidst all that my parents water heater just broke. Good grief. Although I totally want to own a home, your scenario & my moms are perfect examples of why Chris is not so anxious!!! =)
I'm proud of you! Your kitchen is going to be wonderful.
Beige is beautiful...and safe.
Nothing at all wrong with beige. At least it can be trusted!!
